DISTURBING IMAGES OF TORTURE COMMITTED BY GREEK AUTHORITIES

This is a shocking video showing two young Albanians being tortured by Greek Police in Athens Omonia Square police station last June 2006. In the video a policeman is beating the two and forcing them to slap each other around the ears and insult each other. Each time they refused, he beat them with a baton while two other officers looked on. One of the officers present recorded the beatings on a mobile phone, most likely to show off to their colleagues. However, the video has been now made public with disturbing consequences.

And Greece is supposed to be an European country, however, this video shows the opposite. It shows drastic human rights violation that deserves attention of all world human rights organisations and the European Council.

Many Albanian immigrants say that this is only the tip of the iceberg and this type of treatment is part of a much larger picture of systematic human rights violation of immigrants by Greek police authorities.

Ordinary citizens who were waiting for presidential motorcade to pass by, were questioned by tv media about their opinion on president's arrival in Albania and their expectations. Here are some of the opinions:

A historic date for all Albanians

President Bush is given a hero's welcome in Albania. This is the first visit ever of a serving president of USA to visit Albania and will be remembered long time, even though it only lasted eight hours.

Albania is the only country where no one has seen any protests against USA or the President. Some even say the Albanians are the most proamerican people on the planet. This is not a hoax. This is a real deal and there is a reason for it.

Why Albanians love Americans? Simply because americans are a freedom loving people and they showed this love in practice many times in the history of Albanians (and other small nations) by defending the Albania's right to exists as a state despite the appetite of many world powers and neighboring countries to carve and erase the country from the map. e.g. USA's President Wilson in 1919, at the Paris Peace Conference, was a crucial voice that saved Albania from being ceased as a state. Also in a more recent case, in 1999, it was USA and United Kingdom (leading) that saved kosovar albanians from being extinct by the killing machinery of Serbia. Therefore, the actions of the american people speak very loud about their just intentions towards small nations like Albanians. And remember, Kosovo had no oil worthy of such intervention in 1999! You americans should be proud of your soldiers who risk their own life to bring peace and stability to the world. They need your support!

Albania as a state had its ups and downs in relations with USA, but after fall of communism in 1990 (something that America and Bush Senior again helped to get rid off), since then, Albania and albanians are back on track to drive forward a lasting relationship with the american people. We urge the american government to be more involved in Albania and Kosovo, to work closely with Albanians and deter potential involvements of radical islamists who may want to exploit new democracies like ours, by offering the very much needed financial incentives, but with a high price in return. We are aware of this, but we need your help!

Albanians are a nation that will long remember your sincere attitude and support in our cause to freedom and democracy. Albanians stand united with Americans in the War on Terror! If you are told different, don't believe them! They are all ill wishers and they'll do anything to convince you otherwise!

If you are an american and you ever thought that America should not get involved or intervene in hot spots around the world, we Kosovar albanians are a living proof to show you that such intervention are needed to bring order and democracy in the world. If you think that by turning your back to the sufferings of other people will make your life better, you are terribly wrong and that makes you a bad person. Sooner or later, the global instability is going to effect your home. War is never ok, but we come from there and had it not been for America's intervention, there would have been hardly anyone to tell you what really happened in Kosova.

Soni Malaj Speaks Out On Molitva Theft: "The songs have similarities!"
Soni Malaj finally breaks her silence on the biggest controversy of the Eurovision Song Contest 2007. Accusations have been flying back and forth that the winner of this year's Eurovision "Molitva" performed by Marija Serifovic, is in fact a steal from an older Albanian hit, "Ndarja" by Soni Malaj...winner of "Best Song" award in Top Fest 3, in the year 2006.

Soni Malaj, in a live interview for Top Channel News, admits that while watching the Serbian singer perform, she started noticing that the song was similar to her ballad "Ndarja". The Albanian singer claims that the beginning of the refrain is almost identical, the tune and harmony of the song are the same, and the interpretation is very similar.

This statement was backed by Maki, the composer of the song "Ndarja", who says that while those similarities do exist, the melodic base is different. However this matter will be investigated.

Soni says that the decision is now left to the hands of professional musicians to decide the originality of "Molitva".

The newscast also mentions that the composer of "Molitva" is a commonly heard name on the topic of "rip-off" versions originating from neighboring countries.

Meanwhile, no statement has been released from Eurovision officials as of yet. The internet community has been buzzing over this controversy while they await an answer.

This is not the first time Serbia is being accused of song theft. In Eurovision 2004, there were allegations concerning the Serbian representative Zejlko Joksimovic and his song "Lane Moje". Azerbaijani composer Alihana Samedov claimed that Serbia's entry was a rip-off of his instrumental song "Sen Gelmez Oldun".

Mensur (father) is demanding from his sons to be tough men and treat their wife harshly. Each one in turn show off in front of his father by telling how they've badly beaten their wifes, each one trying to show tougher than the other one. In the end, the father is not satisfied and tells them "this is how you beat your wife" and calls to his wife who showed up all covered in bandages like a mummy. Obviously, his sons were terrified to see their mum in such a state and ask "Is this our mother!? Oh... mother!".

So, basically, before you beat your wife, think how your wife could be someone's mother etc. Therefore, this satire is sending the opposite message of that shown in this comedy video: "Treat your wife with respect!".

Guests: Shkurte Ajeti & Dhurata Lipovica - Ford Models' Supermodel of the World 07 contestants, an event that took place in New York, on 17th January 2007.

Supermodel of the World is the biggest modeling contest in the world, established by Eileen Ford in 1980, it searches the pre-eminent female model in over 50 countries that successfully finds fashion's newest faces year after year. 44 countries participated in this year contest and amongst them three albanian models: Anada Mikollari representing Albania, Shkurte Ajeti - representing Kosova and Dhurata Lipovica - though from Kosova she represented Macedonia (FYROM).

The 1st Prize and $250,000 modelling contract with Ford Models went to Sanne Njihof from Netherlands. 2nd Prize and $150,000 modelling contract was won by Belarusian model whereas 3rd Prize and $100,000 modelling contract went to Denmark.

Shkurte attracted special attention and according to witnesses and reports, she was the most applauded one on the runway. But, it looks as if her age (20) was crucial in judges final decision as they prefer much younger models to work with. Nevertheless, their portofolio has reached the right people and the door to the professional modelling world has already opened for these girls in several countries in Europe such as Portugal, Spain, Italy, Austria and perhaps more to come in the future. Plus of course USA (New York) and their own country Kosovo. All of this would not have been possible without the help of Fadil Berisha, New York based professional albanian photographer who promoted and supported these girls all the way to the finals.

Story happens in the first days after NATO troops enter Kosova. After the signing of the military agreement in Kumanovo, in the house of the retarded, the guards and employees leave their places and flee. Inmates are all retarded but they have a special philosophy of life, they have their wishes and their dreams. Being free gives them a chance to make dreams come true, but they are confronted with a reality and environment, which in one way or another is very different. From the moment of getting out the fences, they are conflicted with people that call themselves free. Gradually this conflict roughens and with it degenerates the meaning of freedom. Uneventful, panoramic and killingly metaphoric

"Kukumi" is a Kosovar movie. Kosova is a country-wannabe struggling to retain its national identity. After a 20-year hiatus, Kosovar cinematography is the last thing that has been paid attention at, after the war. Therefore, I can conclude that "Kukumi" is one good movie with an excellent potential to be completely forgotten within a short period of time. The movie is intrinsically flawed both in scene chronology and subject relevance,while Kukumi (the main character), is an innocent victim of die-hard direction that takes advantage of the metaphoric approach to come up with unspoken messages. Madmen and women are unleashed of an asylum the day the war in Kosova ceases. Kukumi, Mara and another guy are split from the herd to embark into an exhausting, nerve-wrenching, 2-hour journey which aims at the railway station and ends to nowhere. Yes, nowhere, at all! Kukumi (Luan Jaha, who is quite convincing) seems to be the "brainiest" of the three with his insightful, quirky questions he raises and stories he narrates. Dialogue is meandering, events are incoherently combined and the cast is laden with unfilled gaps of character history and vaguely defined relationships. There is a scene where the madmen go to a village and after they mingle together for a while, a man comes out of a car with a huge set of sunglasses for sale. Remember: it is a village with less than 100 people, inhabited by traditionally-clothed elderly and children who spend their life grazing cows. And this guy offers them sunglasses in the very wake of war, in a time when they all had to be hundreds of miles away living as refugees and bracing for a massive comeback. This is such an incoherence and disloyalty to the reality like the one the movie takes place in, and, as such, it is utterly unwarrantable. However, Kukumi is beautiful all along. Breathtaking panoramas slide in between scenes and directorial absurdities. Albanian flag is seen several times. Extras look very unfitting to the scenes. A Chinese "investor" speaks to the cheering crowds that have mysteriously repopulated the village, which, as suggested by an incinerated school, should have had the same fate as other devastated and deserted villages all over Kosova. The movie was financed by the Ministry of Culture and several other sources, which speaks of the movie's being a mere step to open doors for the future of Kosovar cinematography towards the unpaved path of a once-prosperous industry. The Story

The war in Kosova is over, the country is in ruins. The life of the young peasant woman (Sheqerie Buqaj) is marked by desperation and mourning. During the war, she and her children had to leave their home, while her husband (Blerim Destani) volunteered to join the army. Serbian soldiers have taken away her children and also subjected her to harsh treatment. At this stage, her only task in life is to find her two children. Her husband returns, but not unharmed - an invalid confined to a wheelchair, he is haunted by memories of war. The two of them now live side by side in silence.

In the course of their investigations concerning the whereabouts of her children, the peasant woman finally gets to know the government employee Zana (Rajmonda Bulku), who has been commissioned by the state to locate the missing children. Zana is extremely impressed by the peasant woman's persistence when it comes to finding her children, and she does everything within her power to help her. Her own daughter Fleta (Ermela Teli) works for the UNMIK (United Nations Mission in Kosova) and is thus familiar with the recklessness of the administrative authorities. She increasingly distances herself from her parents and her mentally handicapped brother. She longs to start all over again and simply forget the past. Her unemployed father Gjergj (Bislim Muqa) never leaves the apartment anymore and only perceives the outside world via television and newspapers. He disapproves of his wife's work, his daughter's work and everything else happening in the country. More and more, his behaviour resembles that of an autistic person, and finally he sees only one way out for him and his life...

An elder Albanian (Faruk Begolli) criss-crosses the mountains, where he searches in vain new hope. During these excursions he runs into an embittered Serb (Meto Jovanovski). In spite of their hardship and dispair, both unable to stop rowing about the questions of national and religious identity. In the end, all the featured individuals and families break down in the face of their heterogeneous attempts to cope with the past and their desperate search for hope, a purpose in life and missing loved ones.

Kosova Desperate Search portrays the traumatic effects of the Kosova War on the Albanian population. The memories of the atrocities committed by the serb military, particularly in relation to civilians, cannot be erased from the mind of the people. The different approaches to coming to terms with the past clearly show the powerlessness of the population. Suicide, ignorance, escape or self-sacrifice appear to be the only solutions that make sense. After all, even in situations where there is reason to be hopeful, this hope is nipped in the bud. The civilian population of Kosova suffers from repercussions of the war to this day. Countless desperate women and mothers are currently still looking for their missing husbands and children.

The Making of the Film

The director of the film "Kosova - Desperate Search", Sunaj Raca, had the basic idea for the film long before the outbreak of the actual Kosova War. While he was studying at the university in Pristina, Slobodan Milosevic took over power in Kosova. The rights and the freedom of the Albanian population in Kosova were severely impaired by the new regime. It was during this period that the initial idea to make a film about the suppression and the helplessness of the people was born. Sunaj Raca did not have the opportunity to shoot the film until after the liberation of Kosova. An Albanian - language starring Albanian actors which addresses the problems of the Albanian population. After Sunaj Raca has had the opportunity to film some documentaries about the events during the Kosova War following the end of the latter, the idea to make a feature film took on shape. The film "Kosova - Desperate Search" is based on a true story. Inspired by this tragic event and his vision, he began to develop the script.

The film is also of major relevance to the involved actors. All of them agreed to work for a low salary in order to ensure the realisation of the project. The entire crew considered it important to produce a film which would draw worldwide attention to the horrific occurrences in Kosova. Motivated by their own experiences with the war and the tragic history of the country, they all had a strong desire to participate in the film.

The director Sunaj Raca talks about the importance of the film to him and to his homeland:

"Kosova - Desperate Search is a special film for Kosova, because it is the first ever to portray the suffering of the population before, during and after the Kosova War. The focus is on the problems associated with the war and the helplessness of the people who have lost everything, not only in materialistic, but also in idealistic terms. I believe it is necessary for my homeland to present to the world an insight into our painful history by means of this film. The issue of missing persons in particular is one which all countries that have been involved in a war are familiar with. Our message to humankind is that wars cause irreparable damages, specifically serious psychological ones. This fact should teach us a lesson, and we should not allow wars to continue knocking on our doors!"

But, not for long. The harmony is spoiled by an organised criminal gang lead by Beka (Enver Petrovci) who kidnapped his only daughter and demanded 1 million euro in compensation for her life. The misfortune to Robert's family becomes even greater, when a close family friend betrays him in continuance by giving the gang inside information. Robert is in the end forced to comply by going to the bank to withdraw the money. To his fortune, a skilled detective from Kosova police, leading the investigation, manages to track them down and in a dramatic fashion, the girl is in the end rescued unharmed. The film finishes with a happy ending and family's harmony is once more restored.

This is the video clip that promoted her last album "Opium" beginning of July 2006. The theme of the song is very interesting. She met a boy in Turkey (probably holiday resorts) and got surprised to learn that he can speak little albanian too. She discovers that the boy's ancestors were albanians who emigrated to Turkey during opression that happened to albanians in Greece at the beginning of this century (most likely Cameria). It is a fact that during last and this century, millions of albanians had to leave their homeland because of oppression by occupying forces (e.g. Serbia, Greece etc.) and a large number of them ended up in Turkey. It is unfortunate but expulsion of albanians from the balkans were projects that were drafted by the highest government bodies of Serbia and Greece and in most cases were implemented with precision. There are estimates that speak the figure around 6 to 7 millions albanians who nowdays live in Turkey. Most of them have now forgotten their mother language apart from the very elder ones. So, the song has some historical significance and should remind us of our own history.

Norm Gershman holds a presentation at the AACL HQ where he presents his new documentary on how Albanian people protected the Jewish residents of Albania and Kosovo during the Holocaust, by sheltering them in their homes and refusing to turn them over to the Nazi's. Not a single Jew was allowed to be captured by the Nazi occupiers of Albania during the Second World War. Based on the book "Rescue in Albania - How Albania saved its Jews during WWII".

Founded by former Congressman Joseph DioGuardi and a board of Albanian Americans in 1989 and is the the only registered lobby in Washington, DC, representing the concerns and interests of the Albanian people. The purpose of the Civic League is to further the human rights and the national cause of the divided nation of more than seven million Albanians living side by side in the Balkans in Albania, Kosova, western Macedonia, southeastern Montenegro, Presheve, Medvegje, Bujanovc (southern Serbia), and Chameria (northern Greece).
